At St Michael’s, we believe that Physical Education (PE) is a vital and valuable part of our core curriculum. Our PE program is accessible, inclusive, and offers a wide variety of activities and sports.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the requirements of The National Curriculum, with FunTime PE as our key teaching resource. This dynamic scheme covers a range of areas, including Fundamental Movement, Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Swimming, Health & Fitness, and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. PE is taught by specialist teachers who play an essential role in promoting the subject, either through direct teaching or coaching others. Additionally, our class teachers and higher-level teaching assistants (HLTAs) are well-supported and confident in delivering the PE curriculum across all year groups, from EYFS to Year 6.

PE at St Michael’s is just one aspect of our broader commitment to health and well-being, which also includes after-school clubs, sports events, inclusion initiatives, and enrichment activities.

Our goals in delivering this wide-ranging offer are:

  • Physical Activity & Healthy Lifestyles: To ensure that all children are physically active and develop positive, enjoyable attitudes toward physical activity and healthy living.
  • Achievement & Positive Attitudes: To help every child experience success through physical activity, fostering self-confidence and positive attitudes.
  • Safety & Safe Practice: To teach children the importance of safety in physical activities and ensure they understand the principles of safe practice.
  • Self-worth & Respect for Others: To nurture a sense of self-worth in each child while fostering respect for the different abilities of others.
  • Fair Play & Positive Sporting Behavior: To encourage fair play, respect for rules, and good sportsmanship, helping children develop positive behavior in sports.
  • Observational & Evaluative Skills: To enhance children’s ability to observe, assess, and evaluate their own and others’ performances, improving their critical thinking skills.
  • Equality of Access: To ensure that all children have equal access to all areas of PE, with the facilities and equipment available to both boys and girls.
  • Support for Special Educational Needs: To identify and support children with special needs, ensuring tailored PE experiences that meet their individual needs.
  • Sportsmanship: To promote positive behavior in sporting competitions, encouraging children to accept authority and handle outcomes with respect.

In summary, our PE program at St Michael’s is inclusive and comprehensive, offering children the chance to develop physical skills, build confidence, and foster important social and emotional learning.
